TOTNES ST MARY BUILDING PROJECT VISION

Our vision for St Mary's is threefold:

  • Refurbishment of the church interior
  • Enhancement of the church entrance and yard
  • Repair and Restoration of external fabric

These are three distinct phases of the building project, and are complementary to the use of the site and our vision.  We will seek to use sustainable and renewable energy.

The restoration of the stone rood screen, will run concurrently within the overall phased framework of the project.

Our first task is to create a flexible, warm and comfortable interior with a new stone floor, and for the first time, new facilities including cafe, toilets, storage, shop and meeting rooms. This will enable the church building to expand its present civic, community and cultural activities.
We are specifying high quality materials and craftsmanship presented in a distinctive contemporary style, including moveable seating which can be used by congregation and audience alike.

State of the art lighting and audio visual systems will be discreetly integrated into the building to enhance the interior for both sacred and secular purposes.
The new floor and facilities will be designed to respect existing church fabric, allowing the interior of the building to respond to the needs of future generations.

Secondly, we propose a relandscaping of the churchyard using archeaological evidence as a possible theme.
The churchyard will become a green space which visitors of all ages can enjoy..

Finally, the repair and restoration of the external fabric will help at the very heart and soul of our town.

These changes will provide:

  • Flexibility well into the 21st century
  • Comfortable environment for all ages of worshippers
  • An enhanced space in which to share our Christian message
